Cupcakes Go SQUARE

Recently, our friends at Square Native visited our one-night Gourmet Cupcake Workshop and took these beautiful photos. They were also kind enough to write up a little review about the class as well.

Here's a little eye candy in case you still haven't made up your mind about joining us. Keep up to date with the latest happenings by following us on Facebook.

June's One-Night Gourmet Cupcake Workshops

June's one-night Cupcake Workshops are in the planning phase. We're looking at one session being held on Wednesday, June 20th at 7:30pm. If that fills, we'll open an additional night.

If you'd like to join us, simply click on the PayPal link provided to the right and register. Classes are held Provo Bakery, 190 E 100 N in Provo. Here is a list of items you'll need to bring with you to class:

  • 2-3 Small mixing bowls (2-3 cup sized - even Tupperware will work) for mixing frosting colors, flavors, etc.
  • An apron
  • A hand towel or two (some folks even bring a hand towel and a package of baby wipes)
  • At least 3 (but preferably 4-6) LARGE disposable frosting bags - any grocery store bakery will sell you these or you can buy a small box of them at WalMart. (Reusable bags don't really work here. The frosting tips we're going to be using don't fit in a traditionally cut/prepped reusable frosting bag.)
  • 2 Large Decorating tips. Photo available. (a 3-pack set available at WalMart for $3)
  • A box, tray, or some method of transporting your finished cupcakes home.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

A Sabbatical From Cake Decorating Classes

I taught my first Fundamentals of Cake Decorating Class over 2 years ago. It's been a really fun thing to do over the years and I've had a great opportunity to get to know a lot of really talented people. It's been really fulfilling to invite in a group of women (and 2 guys) that had no outside experience in cake decorating and watch them develop their skills over just 4 short weeks.

Life seems to get more and more complex and the opportunity I've had to host these sessions has become less attainable. This past winter I was contacted by a gentleman that was interested in classes for his girlfriend. He asked if I'd ever offered a one-night session for something like cupcakes. I thought it a good idea, but didn't really buckle down with it until this month.

When I finally opened registration for the class, it filled up within about 24 hours. As a result, I opened registration for an additional workshop and subsequently, that filled up within a day or so as well. What I really need to do is say, thanks Brady (seen pictured below), you've inspired these cupcakes classes and everyone gets to benefit.

Next Gourmet Cupcake Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23rd at 7:30pm. Feel free to comment below if you'd like additional information.

January 2012 Fundamentals of Cake Decorating

Fundamentals of Cake Decorating, Supply and Tool List

Fundamentals of Cake Decorating - Supply and Tool List

Here is a supply list that you'll need to start accumulating if you're planning on enrolling in an upcoming decorating session. The thinks listed (and pictured) below are things that you'd need to bring with you each week to class. I found that purchasing a large inexpensive tool box was the best way to keep my supplies together.

  • A long serrated knife (like a bread knife) as pictured here: http://bit.ly/gQ4aI9

  • A cake decorating spatula as pictured here - 10" -12" in length: http://bit.ly/gIxPYM (Available at Wal-Mart - you'll have the choice between an angled spatula and a flat spatula - my preference lies with flat - around $5-$6)

  • A small variety of cake decorating tips: a basic star tip, a basic petal tip, and a basic round tip (more info available if needed, please ask if you'd prefer tip size numbers) Standard decorator tips (Wilton brand) are numbered. There are 3 sets of 4 tips each, available at Wal-Mart that would be ideal for class. They are in the craft area with other cake decorating supplies. Please do NOT bring any plastic decorating tips.
Large Tip Set - tip #10, #12, #21, and #32
Small Tip Set - tip #3, #5, #16, #18
Flower Tip Set - tip #102, #104, #224, #252
  • Some sort of cake plate, stand, or pedestal, preferably one that spins, but anything will do for starters. (Wal-Mart carries a basic Wilton spinning cake stand that was around $15 if I remember correctly. Definitely a good investment in the long run)

Additionally there will be a few odds and ends you need from home each week - things like small mixing bowls, a hand towel, apron, small pointed scissors, and wax paper.

March 2010 Session is Underway

First Session Scheduled - First Published in May 2010

First Session Scheduled!

The first class I'll be offering is a Basics of Cake Decorating class. After this 4 week course, held once a week on WEDNESDAY nights from 7:00pm - 8:30/9pm, you'll have all the skills you'll need to make a great cake that is certain to impress a crowd.

Because June is filled with magical things like Girl's Camp and family reunions we're starting the cake classes on WEDNESDAY JULY 7th. Classes will be held in Orem at my home. Each week you will be leaving with an 8" double layer cake (white or chocolate) that is beautifully decorated.

While I will be providing the cakes, frosting, frosting bags, and such, each student will need to bring with them the following things to class each week:

  • A small variety of cake decorating tips: a basic star tip, a basic petal tip, and a basic round tip (more info available if needed, please ask)

  • Some sort of cake plate, stand, or pedestal, preferably one that spins, but anything will do for starters. (Wal-Mart carries a basic Wilton spinning cake stand that was around $15 if I remember correctly. Definitely a good investment in the long run)

In The Beginning - First Published in April 2010

Growing up as the youngest of 5, and slightly trailing the last of the siblings, I like to think of myself as the 'love caboose' in my family. With a fairly good spread, from oldest to youngest, my Mom always referred to me as her "Icing on the Cake."

With over 10 years now under my belt with cake decorating, I've really been noticing comments from people like, "I wished I could do that...." or "That doesn't look like anything I could make..." and I've begun to realize that ANYONE could decorate just as well as I do, if they had the basics and as much practice.

I had a 'lightbulb moment' recently. Maybe all the "icing on the cake" comments from my mom had impacted my drive toward cakes? That combined with the time watching her decorate as a child, seemed to spell out my destiny.
Here I am now... I don't mind making your cakes from time to time BUT wouldn't it be better if you knew how to do it on your own? You too can "ooooooh and awe" the crowd.

I can't wait to teach you.
Details to come.
